Project Description:
The remediation of a 42 acre site formally occupied by a Shell Oil fuel storage depot located adjacent to a main railway line.
Due to the nature of the previous operation, heavy concentrations of hydrocarbons were found and had to be dealt with prior to any future development.
The most cost effective solution was to bio remediate on site.
Works Included:
- Site investigation works to establish contamination levels
- Excavation of contaminated areas approx. 45000m3
- Formation of windrows with excavated materials, and introduction of mushroom compost and covering with thermal fleeces to aid the breakdown of the contaminants
- After a period of regular turning of the windrows, the contaminants breakdown and when the levels reach acceptable then the clean materials can be reintroduced to the site
- Due to the smells created by both the hydrocarbons and the compost, odour suppression units had to be introduced to reduce the nuisance to local residents
- Ground water treatment was also an issue and a filter system was introduced to handle approx 360m3 per day. The water was pumped into a temporary lagoon with a filter boom to collect the surface contaminants, from there it was then pumped into the main sand and carbon filter tanks for further cleaning before entering an on site soakaway
