Craigmarloch Nursery

value 400k approx - duration 28 weeks

Design and build contract for Craigmarloch Nurseries at new site on Glasgow Road to the west of Kilsyth. The contract involved a bulk excavation of an existing shale bing to allow construction of new greenhouse, distribution and infrastructure.

Some environmental initiatives were used on this contract to recycle rainwater to be utilised in the plant production process. All rainwater is collected from the roof area of the greenhouse and distribution area and piped to a storage tank located on the south side of the site. The rainwater is then circulated by pumps, to taps situated throughout the site to water the produce. It is hoped to significantly reduce the water demand on the mains supply by this process.

Craigmarloch NurseryAs this is a “Trade Only” business, access to the site was requested from Glasgow Road. This necessitated the construction of a ghost-island and realignment of the westbound carriageway. Several concerns were raised by the local council regards this access, however through working closely with the Roads Department a suitable solution was subsequently designed and constructed.

Due to the vast open area of the site, bunds were constructed around three sides, which has significantly reduced the amount of exposure previously experienced.

The greenhouse is an aluminium and glass construction and is accessible on the west side, due to the height, by both forklifts and commercial vehicles.

The distribution and office areas are of a standard steel portal frame construction, clad with insulated panels. A large front yard has been created to allow accessibility for articulated lorries, which can be reversed into the loading bay. Dock levellers were installed to allow ease of loading and unloading of these vehicles.

Craigmarloch NurseryThe site has been developed by the client to allow for the possibility of increasing the number of greenhouses to 3 no. in the future as the business continues to grow.
